On the northern shore of the Strait of Hormuz at Bandar Abbas, Bandar-e Shahid Rajaee (IR BSR) commands the approach to the Persian Gulf and serves as Iran's principal deep-water gateway. It handled more than 3 million TEU in 2024, up around 13% and roughly 85% of Iran's containerised trade, alongside dry bulk, mineral oil and general cargo; total capacity exceeds 100 million tonnes a year and container capacity reaches about 6 million TEU. Spread over some 2,400 hectares with around 35 berths, it is the terminus of Iran's rail network and anchors hinterland flows toward Tehran and the wider North–South corridor. More than half of Iran's foreign-trade volume passes through here, making it the default entry and exit point for almost any containerised Iran shipment. A major series of explosions in late April 2025 caused numerous casualties, damaged parts of the port and disrupted operations, so forwarders should confirm capacity and transit times before booking. Because of US and international sanctions on Iran, customs, banking and compliance arrangements must be checked carefully ahead of any fixture. Where Bandar Abbas is not mandatory, Chabahar on the Gulf of Oman or transhipment via third countries can serve as alternatives depending on routing.
