Anchored in Iran's Khuzestan petrochemical belt, Bandar-e Mahshahr (IR MRX) is a liquid-bulk and tanker port built around crude and petrochemical exports. It serves as the maritime outlet for the Mahshahr Petrochemical Special Economic Zone (PetZone), a roughly 3,000-hectare area home to more than 30 complexes, and is reached via the long, deep Khor Musa channel, where about 12 m of draught admits tankers up to some 80,000 dwt; after expansion the port's export capacity reaches around 40 million tonnes a year. Rail and road links tie it into the south-western hinterland alongside its larger neighbour Bandar Imam Khomeini. The port is not configured for containers or conventional general cargo: box traffic belongs at Bandar-e Shahid Rajaee near Bandar Abbas, while breakbulk and dry bulk are better handled at Bandar Imam Khomeini. For chemical, liquid and dangerous-goods parcels, however, Mahshahr offers dedicated specialised capacity.
