The Maryland Port Administration runs Baltimore as one of the leading US gateways for automobiles and roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) cargo, though Brunswick, Georgia, edged ahead on vehicle units for a second straight year in 2025. Baltimore still moved about 728,000 vehicles and more than 887,000 tons of farm and construction equipment (up 6%), handling roughly 50 million tons overall — its second-best year after the 52.3-million-ton record of 2023. Containers cross four berths at the Seagirt Marine Terminal, while around a quarter of all US coal exports ship out through the port on the Patapsco River in Maryland. Bulk salt and sugar plus breakbulk steel round out a diverse cargo mix. The 15-metre federal channel accommodates large bulk carriers and car carriers, and rail links from CSX and Norfolk Southern reach the industrial Mid-Atlantic and Midwest. After the MV Dali struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in March 2024, traffic halted for about eleven weeks until the channel reopened that June. Customs clearance runs through US CBP under standard federal rules, with no port-specific barriers for international freight. For pure containerised east-coast volumes, New York/New Jersey and Norfolk offer deeper mainline coverage.
