Registered under UN/LOCODE NO BSD, Ballstad is the largest traditional fishing village in Norway's Lofoten archipelago, sitting at the sheltered inner end of the Vestfjord on Vestvågøy. For more than a thousand years its economy has centred on the seasonal skrei (Arctic cod) fishery, with wooden drying racks, working boatyards and fish-processing plants lining the harbour. It is a fishing and shelter harbour rather than a commercial cargo port: there are no scheduled container or general-cargo services. Landward access is by road via the E10 through Leknes, as Lofoten has no rail link. Shippers needing container or breakbulk capacity route through Bodø or the ore and general-cargo port of Narvik on the mainland. Fresh and dried fish leave Ballstad mainly by refrigerated truck and ferry.
