Formerly a trading port of some standing, Baleshwar (also Balasore) on the Burhabalang River in Odisha, India, today handles virtually no seaborne trade. The town sits about 16 miles upriver from the mouth on the Bay of Bengal, some 11 km inland, and cargo is at most moved by barge from the anchorage in Baleshwar Road. There are no fixed container or general-cargo terminals, so its freight relevance is limited. For ocean and container freight in northern Odisha, Paradip, Dhamra and Haldia/Kolkata are the key ports, while new deepwater projects such as Chandipur and Bichitrapur are planned in the district.
