Once concealing the secret Soviet submarine base known as Object 825, Balaklava is a narrow, well-sheltered bay on the Crimean coast that today matters mainly for naval use, yachting and tourism. It sits about 8 km south of Sevastopol; Crimea is internationally recognised as part of Ukraine but has been under Russian control since 2014, which places regular commercial traffic under sanctions. No commercial freight or container handling takes place at Balaklava, whose quays are shallow (around 1.8 m) and serve small craft. For Black Sea ocean freight, ports such as Odesa, Constanța or – subject to legal and sanctions status – Novorossiysk are the relevant gateways.
