SLN (Société Le Nickel), part of the Eramet group, runs the ore port on Kouaoua Bay on New Caledonia's east coast purely for nickel-ore exports. Two terminals load ore onto bulk carriers, fed by the 11 km coastal conveyor known as the Serpentine, which carries ore down from the Mea mine. There is no container or general-cargo activity here; the cargo profile is entirely mineral. Operations have been interrupted at times by arson attacks on the Serpentine (2017–2020) and by the 2024 unrest. For containers, breakbulk and general imports, Nouméa is New Caledonia's principal port.
