Shougang Hierro Perú runs the private ore pier at Bahia San Nicolás, near San Juan de Marcona about 520 km southeast of Lima, shipping iron ore from the adjacent Marcona mine whose capacity approaches 20 million tonnes a year. The deep, year-round ice-free natural harbour suits large bulk carriers and makes San Nicolás Peru's principal iron-ore export outlet. It is not, however, a container or general-cargo terminal in the usual sense. That is set to change: in 2024 a 30-year concession for a new public multipurpose terminal, worth around USD 405 million, was awarded to Jinzhao Perú. Until it opens, containers and breakbulk continue to move through Callao, with General San Martín (Pisco) serving the southern coast.
