Conveyor belts, transfer towers and shiploaders feeding an iron-ore pier in the northeastern corner define Guayacán, a private bulk terminal in Herradura Bay just south of Coquimbo. The port is run by Compañía Minera del Pacífico (CMP), part of the CAP group, and ships iron ore brought in from the nearby El Romeral mine. An offshore mooring additionally handles the discharge of petroleum products and LPG. Deep and well sheltered, the bay accommodates bulk carriers up to roughly 200,000 dwt and 16.2 m draught, with around 88 vessel calls a year. It is not a container or general-cargo port: the multipurpose harbour of Coquimbo lies about one nautical mile north, while container services route through San Antonio and Valparaíso.
