Eighteen kilometres up the Valdivia River from the Pacific, Bahia De Valdivia is a river port whose seagoing trade actually concentrates at Corral, near the river mouth in southern Chile. There the Portuaria Corral pier takes Panamax vessels up to 229 m and 12.2 m draught, whereas the channel off the city of Valdivia itself is shallow at around 3 m. In 2024 Portuaria Corral shipped roughly 800,000 t of woodchips on 14 vessels, mainly to Japan and China. To protect quality, an air-dome storage hall of about 20,400 m² – one of the largest in South America – is being built at Corral to shield the woodchip pile from rain and cut dust. Road links connect the Los Ríos region to Chile's main network. Larger container and forestry volumes tend to use San Vicente/Talcahuano or Lirquén to the north.
