Copper concentrate, copper cathodes, wheat, fishmeal and Bolivian soy in transit are the staples that move across Bahia De Matarani, the leading port of southern Peru. Operated since 1999 by Terminal Internacional del Sur (TISUR) under a 30-year concession, it handled about 7.6 million tonnes in 2023, up 17.5% on 2022, of which roughly 88% was solid bulk. Mineral exports dominate: in 2023 the top shippers were Cerro Verde (30.8% of volume), Las Bambas (16.6%) and Antapaccay (8.1%). Closed warehouses holding around 300,000 t of copper concentrate and shiploaders running up to 2,000 t/h support the mineral trades, while containers and breakbulk remain secondary. Rail along the southern line and road link the quays to Arequipa, the Altiplano and landlocked Bolivia. For container-focused shipments Callao is the natural alternative, with Ilo serving the far south.
