Grain shipments of around 13 million tonnes in 2025 — roughly a fifth more than the year before — mark out Bahía Blanca as one of Argentina's leading deep-water ports, sitting on the Atlantic some 680 kilometres southwest of Buenos Aires. The complex groups several terminals: Ingeniero White is the principal outlet for cereals, oilseeds and byproducts from southern Buenos Aires province and La Pampa, while Puerto Galván and the Profertil berth handle petroleum, petrochemicals, urea and ammonia. Total throughput reached about 18.8 million tonnes in 2025. Among the deepest harbours on the Argentine coast, it accommodates large bulk carriers and tankers year-round. Its proximity to the Vaca Muerta shale formation is reshaping its role: the port exported roughly 238,000 tonnes of Vaca Muerta crude in 2025, and in 2026 Transportadora Gas del Sur announced a multi-billion-dollar plan to process and export natural-gas liquids there. Containers are secondary to the dominant dry-bulk and liquid-bulk business, with boxed cargo generally routed via Buenos Aires. Inland connections run by road and broad-gauge rail into the farming districts of the southern Pampas.
