For decades ships unloaded ore and carried away finished steel at Bagnoli; since the Italsider works closed in 1992, the western Naples site has been a remediation and urban-redevelopment area. Under the PRARU regeneration programme the 800 m North Pier is being secured at a cost of about €24 million and will serve only as a berth for emergency evacuation by sea, with no commercial cargo handled. Demolition of the former Italsider central pier began in December 2025. In practical terms Bagnoli has no freight relevance for shippers; containers, breakbulk and dry bulk in the Naples area move through the Port of Naples and Salerno.
