Russia's metals and grain belts reach saltwater partly through Azov, a river-sea port on the south bank of the Don some eight nautical miles above the river's mouth on the Sea of Azov. Annual throughput of roughly five to six million tonnes is dominated by dry bulk and breakbulk: steel and rolled products, grain, coal, mineral fertilisers, timber, building materials and oil products, much of it bound for the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. Fed by the Volga–Don canal system, the port consolidates inland cargo onto shallow-draft river-sea vessels. It is not a meaningful container gateway; standard boxes and deep-draft ocean ships are handled instead at Rostov-on-Don, Taganrog or the deep-sea Black Sea ports. Operated by JSC Azov Sea Port, it works year-round with winter icebreaker support, making it a practical bulk and general-cargo outlet rather than a containerised one.
