A 226-metre wharf, a four-metre approach channel and a handful of mobile harbour cranes define the working footprint of Azhikkal, a minor port on Kerala's Malabar coast where the Valapattanam River meets the Laccadive Sea. Its trade is overwhelmingly regional: plywood and timber for the local wood industry, coir, cashew, tiles and bagged agricultural goods, alongside an active fishing fleet. Container capability exists but is limited, and the shallow draft rules out deep-sea vessels, which call instead at Kochi (Cochin) or New Mangalore. Road links to Kannur, about twelve kilometres inland, carry cargo to and from the hinterland.
