Az Zawiya is an oil port, not a general-cargo one — and treating it otherwise would mislead any shipper. Located about 40 km west of Tripoli, it combines the Zawiya refinery — at around 120,000 b/d Libya's second-largest after Ras Lanuf, run by the NOC subsidiary Zawia Oil Refining Company — with a significant crude export terminal. A single point mooring handles tankers of up to roughly 140,000 tonnes; the terminal mainly loads light, sweet crude from the Sharara and El-Feel fields and imports the refined products the local market needs. It is built around tankers and pipeline connections, with no facilities for containers or breakbulk. Loadings are periodically interrupted by pipeline disruptions and the wider security situation, so schedules can be unpredictable. For containerised, project or general cargo into western Libya, Tripoli and Misrata are the appropriate gateways.
