Avonmouth Dock, on the north bank of the Avon where it meets the Bristol Channel, forms the Port of Bristol together with Royal Portbury Dock under the Bristol Port Company, with a combined throughput of roughly 9 million tonnes a year. Avonmouth's iconic coal conveyor belts — long a landmark of the site — were dismantled in 2025–26 after the port ceased handling coal; the freed land is being assessed for new uses. Core traffic today is dry bulk: grain, animal feed, wood pellets, aggregates and minerals, supplemented by liquid bulk, forest products and fresh produce. Motorway links (M5/M49) and rail connect Avonmouth to the Midlands and South West England. The Bristol Port Company's planned Deep Sea Container Terminal (DSCT, around £600m, targeting 1.5 million TEU capacity and vessels up to 14,000 TEU) would open the port to large deep-sea container ships; until then, Southampton and Liverpool remain the main container gateways.
