Over 550,000 vehicles a year, dry bulk vessels up to around 130,000 dwt, two dedicated dry bulk terminals: the figures at Bristol's docks describe a versatile cargo complex rather than a container hub. Avonmouth Dock, on the north side of the Avon where it meets the Bristol Channel, forms the Port of Bristol together with Royal Portbury Dock under the Bristol Port Company. The Bristol Port Company's planned £600m Deep Sea Container Terminal (DSCT) would add capacity for ships up to 14,000 TEU and around 1.5 million TEU a year; until it opens, Southampton and Liverpool remain the larger container gateways while Avonmouth plays to its strengths in bulk and general cargo.
