Matson, Reef Shipping and the PDL/PFL service all call at Avatiu, the Cook Islands' only deep-water port, on the north coast of Rarotonga. Following a 2013 upgrade the wharf handles container and fuel-tanker vessels of up to roughly 200 m, discharging with ships' gear plus a mobile shore crane rather than a quay gantry. It manages around 90% of the nation's inbound containers, about 90% of food imports and effectively all of its fuel, alongside breakbulk and reefer cargo. Hinterland reach is limited to Rarotonga's road network, while onward carriage to outer islands such as Aitutaki runs by feeder vessel (Reef only). For larger or time-critical consignments the practical transhipment hub is Auckland.
