A NATO petroleum depot run for the Royal Navy, with its own refuelling jetty south of the village, is what defines Aultbea on Loch Ewe in Wester Ross. The jetty fuels warships and fleet tankers with diesel and offers commercial tank storage, but it handles no container or general cargo. During the Second World War the same sheltered loch assembled the Arctic convoys bound for northern Russia. As an open roadstead, Aultbea otherwise serves regional fishing and aquaculture. Forwarders needing commercial sea freight route via Ullapool, with its ferry links, or via Inverness.
