Energy and petrochemicals define Augusta on Sicily's east coast, the largest natural harbour in the lower Mediterranean and one of Italy's biggest liquid-bulk ports. Around 33 million tonnes pass through each year, of which more than 32 million tonnes are liquid bulk — crude oil, refined petroleum and chemical products. This is not a container port: the Santa Panagia terminal serves the Priolo Gargallo refinery with a main pier of four berths for crude, fuel and gas oil, kerosene, propane and butane, plus a small T-jetty for coasters. Augusta and Priolo together form a sprawling petrochemical complex that covers a large share of Italy's fuel needs, and shipments also include inorganic chemicals and fertilizers. The complex has recently faced cost and competitiveness pressure, with the refinery relying on state-backed liquidity guarantees. A naval base shares the bay. For containerised cargo or ferry traffic, Gioia Tauro and Catania respectively are the relevant Sicilian alternatives.
