Founded in 1910 at the mouth of the Columbia River where it meets the North Pacific, the Port of Astoria operates three deep-draft terminals. They handle dry bulk, breakbulk and project cargo and occasional containerised consignments, alongside a substantial commercial fishing fleet. Astoria is best known internationally as a cruise call, with a terminal on the downtown waterfront. The river channel allows drafts of around 12.5 m, admitting larger ocean-going vessels. Work on the Pier 2 West project began in November 2025, part of a wider redevelopment of the central waterfront between Pier 1 and the Astoria-Megler Bridge. Hinterland access is by road into Oregon and Washington, though the Columbia system's mainstream container and bulk traffic concentrates upriver. For scheduled container services forwarders use Portland or the ports of Seattle and Tacoma, while farm bulk moves through Longview and Kalama.
