Run by AKARPORT, the port of Astakos (UN/LOCODE GR AST) — the NAVIPE Platygiali terminal — is a multipurpose facility on the western Greek mainland combining container, bulk/general-cargo and RoRo terminals within Greece's only free trade and industrial zone, operating 365 days a year around the clock. Deep-water berths take vessels up to about 75,000 DWT at drafts near 14 m, well suited to dry bulk and project cargo. Its position close to the Suez–Gibraltar axis supports both Greek import traffic and transshipment toward the Adriatic, Balkans, Black Sea and Middle East. Recent activity has included serving as a logistics base for hydrocarbon drilling operations in the Ionian Sea. Hinterland access is by road into western Greece; the terminal has no rail connection. The Nautilus Project envisages a megayacht marina complex with a total investment of approximately €524 million (excl. VAT) — some €179.7 million for works within the port zone and around €275 million for land development; formally included in Greece's strategic investment framework in March 2025, the project was at the licensing and planning stage as of mid-2026. In July 2026 the Region of Western Greece approved a €2.19 million investment to upgrade the port facility, covering land-area improvements, technical infrastructure renewal, new equipment and digital services to strengthen connectivity with the Ionian Islands.
