Once a major iron-ore and timber shipping point on Lake Superior's Chequamegon Bay, Ashland today moves almost no commercial freight. The last ore cargo left in 1965, and apart from the occasional coal shipment the Wisconsin port is no longer industrially active; there is no container service. Its surviving ore dock is chiefly a heritage landmark. Forwarders with actual cargo rely on the nearby Duluth-Superior complex, the dominant freight port on Lake Superior.
