When Algeria shipped the world's first LNG cargo to Britain in 1964, it sailed from Arzew, some 30 kilometres east of Oran on the Golfe d'Arzew. The complex combines Arzew Harbour with the Arzew-El-Djedid (Bethioua) installation and is built around hydrocarbon exports: crude oil and products, LNG, LPG, ammonia, fertiliser and salt. At its core, the Arzew and Bethioua liquefaction plants run 13 LNG trains with a combined capacity of around 20.8 million tonnes per year, operated by state company Sonatrach. Each year the port handles roughly 67 million tonnes of cargo across some 3,000 vessel calls, with about 4,500 metres of quayage. Petrochemical units, a desalination plant and the offshore Mers El Hadjadj terminal for urea and ammonia loading round out the site. Container traffic is effectively absent; for boxes, Oran, Mostaganem and Algiers are the relevant ports. For gas, chemical and project shipments, however, Arzew offers highly specialised infrastructure.
