At the mouth of the Northern Dvina, some 50 kilometres from the White Sea's Dvina Bay, Arkhangelsk marks the western gateway of the Northern Sea Route. Its cargo mix is dominated by timber, pulp, lumber, coal, metals, machinery and fish, and it remains Russia's busiest timber-exporting port. The port runs the only container terminal in the Russian Arctic alongside three further cargo terminals for breakbulk and bulk. NewNew Shipping's Arctic Express N1 service links the port directly with China, with around 20 Chinese vessel calls expected in 2025 — double the 2024 figure — carrying mainly timber products eastbound. A large timber-processing cluster of sawmills and pulp-and-paper plants, plus shipbuilding and repair yards, anchors the local economy. Shallow channel depths of around 8 metres limit calls to small and mid-sized vessels today, though a deep-water expansion planned through about 2032 aims to accommodate larger ships and far greater container capacity. The approach ices over in the harsh winter months, but icebreaker support keeps the port working year-round. For ice-free deep-sea calls, nearby Murmansk is the main alternative, while St. Petersburg handles larger container flows further south.
