On the Yorke Peninsula of South Australia, Ardrossan is a bulk-export outlet built around the region's grain and dolomite. A roughly one-kilometre jetty and silos storing large volumes of wheat underpin its grain trade – the port was the first in the state to handle bulk wheat – while a nearby open-cut mine ships dolomite used as a fluxing agent in steelmaking; salt is also loaded here. As an open roadstead without major container facilities, it is geared to dry bulk rather than boxed cargo, which moves through Port Adelaide. Hinterland links are mainly by road from the peninsula's farming districts. For forwarders the port is relevant chiefly to agricultural and mineral bulk shipments. The neighbouring grain port of Port Giles is the practical alternative.
