Ardrishaig owes its existence to the Crinan Canal: opened in 1801 to spare vessels the long passage around the Kintyre peninsula, the canal gave this Loch Fyne settlement its harbour. While the canal itself no longer carries freight, the Scottish Canals-run harbour remains a working asset for Scotland's timber trade, shipping on average around 100,000 tonnes of timber a year. Shallow quay depths of about 1.8 m suit small coastal vessels, and fuel and moderate repairs are on hand. There is no container or international breakbulk handling here; such cargo moves through the Clyde ports of Glasgow and Greenock. For forwarders, Ardrishaig is mainly relevant to roundwood and regional coastal shipments.
