Fresh fish, not freight, defines Ardglass: the County Down harbour lands much of Northern Ireland's catch and hosts the region's third-largest fishing fleet alongside several processing plants. Set on the Irish Sea at the edge of the Lecale peninsula, it is one of the few local harbours accessible at any state of the tide, with North and South fishing piers and the Phennick Cove marina. Shallow quay depths of around 1.8 m, however, keep merchant and container vessels away. For forwarders the port's cargo role is therefore limited, centred on seafood and fishing supplies rather than general trade. Containerised, breakbulk and customs traffic is handled instead at Warrenpoint or Belfast.
