Despite its modest size, Årdalstangen works less as a general-cargo port than as the dedicated industrial quay for Hydro's aluminium smelter at Årdal. The roughly 7.9 m-deep berth mainly receives smelter feedstock – alumina, petroleum coke and pitch – and ships out rolling-slab ingot and foundry alloys from the on-site casthouse. Sitting at the head of the Årdalsfjord, an inner arm of the Sognefjord, it offers sheltered water but a long inland approach through the fjord. Routine container or customs handling is not available; such consignments move on by road to Bergen or Oslo. For forwarders, the port matters mainly when project or bulk cargo is consigned directly to the Hydro works. Bergen and the likewise aluminium-focused port of Høyanger are the practical alternatives for general freight.
