For practically every container entering or leaving Samoa, Apia is the gateway. The country's principal seaport, on the north coast of Upolu in the South Pacific, works container, general and breakbulk cargo across two wharves of roughly 165 m and 185 m, dredged to about 9.5–10.4 m. Behind the quays sit a container yard of some 1.8 hectares, bonded warehousing and 72 reefer points for chilled and frozen boxes, with customs and quarantine handled on site. Managed by the Samoa Ports Authority and served by regional feeder operators such as Pacific Forum Line, the port moves around 50,000 TEU a year, much of it trucked straight from quay to consignee. Shippers needing larger hubs tranship via Pago Pago, Suva or Auckland.
