At the northern tip of Honshu, where the Tohoku rail and expressway corridors reach the sea, Aomori Ko links Aomori Prefecture across Mutsu Bay and the Tsugaru Strait to Hokkaido. The port's defining role is its ferry service: the Tsugaru-Kaikyo line carries passengers and vehicles to Hakodate on six round trips a day, each crossing taking about three hours and forty minutes, paralleling the rail link through the Seikan Tunnel. Cargo berths handle dry bulk, breakbulk and a limited amount of containers, largely in domestic and coastal trades rather than deep-sea services. A cruise terminal with its own border-control facilities opened in April 2019. Hinterland connections are strong via the Tohoku Expressway and Shinkansen, yet international container lines call instead at nearby Hachinohe. For substantial import-export box volumes Hachinohe is the better choice, while Hokkaido-bound traffic favours Tomakomai.
