Chemicals, containers, steel and cars define Antwerp, Europe's second-largest container port after Rotterdam: around 13.5 million TEU and 278 million tonnes in total crossed its Scheldt quays in 2024, with container volumes up 8.1% in TEU and 8.9% in tonnage and total throughput up 2.3%. Depending on the service, Rotterdam, Hamburg or Zeebrugge (now part of Port of Antwerp-Bruges) are the main alternatives for north-west European volumes.
