Set in one of the Indian Ocean's largest natural bays, Antsiranana in northern Madagascar combines a commercial harbour with a naval base and drydock. Annual throughput runs to roughly 187,000 tonnes of dry goods, about 134,000 tonnes of petroleum products, 94,000 tonnes of frozen tuna and only some 38,000 tonnes of containerised cargo. Inland access relies on the RN 6 trunk road, with no rail connection. For substantial container flows, Toamasina, Madagascar's principal port, is the natural alternative, complemented by Mahajanga on the west coast.
