Built by Alcoa from 1948 and handling bauxite – later alumina – from 1958, the Tembladora station in the Gulf of Paria long served as a specialised transshipment point, moving around 525,000 tonnes of alumina a year mainly to North America and Europe. Located on the Chaguaramas peninsula near Carenage, it was a bulk transfer facility for Surinamese and Guyanese material, not a container port. After Alcoa's withdrawal the terminal was upgraded in 2021 and now supports energy-sector logistics, notably as a base for offshore supply vessels (OSV). Its freight relevance is therefore industrial and project-oriented rather than liner or containerised. Container cargo for Trinidad is handled at Port of Spain, while bulk and industrial traffic moves through Point Lisas. Road access runs via the Western Main Road into the greater Port of Spain area.
