With 22 commercial berths across roughly 130 hectares, Annaba handles about 5.18 million tonnes of cargo, 19,300 TEU and some 1,600 vessels a year as Algeria's third-largest port. Iron ore and phosphate are its specialities, feeding the country's steel and fertiliser industries, alongside grain, urea, potash, raw sugar and vegetable oil; a 59-cell grain silo of 16,000-tonne capacity manages agricultural imports. Since April 2024 a new mineral dock has been under construction as part of a roughly €620-million national phosphate scheme: a 1,600-metre quay dredged to 16 metres, sized for up to 10 million tonnes of phosphate a year and linked by a new eastern mining railway to the Bled El Hadba mine near Tébessa, with completion targeted for end-2026. Container volumes remain modest, so forwarders moving boxes usually prefer Algiers, Béjaïa or Skikda. Road and rail links tie the port to the industrial hinterland of north-eastern Algeria.
