Sugar, coffee, vanilla and ylang-ylang perfume oil from the island of Nosy Be move through Andoany (Hell-Ville), its commercial port off Madagascar's north-west coast. Being an open roadstead, the harbour sees ocean-going ships work cargo at anchor. It combines coastal freight, ferry links and fishing, and is the main entry point for ferries to the mainland at Ankify and for cruise calls. Annual traffic runs to roughly 14,000 tonnes of containerised cargo and 46,000 tonnes of petroleum products alongside sugar and coffee. Roads serve the island, but all mainland movement goes by sea. For deep-sea container trades, Toamasina (Tamatave) remains Madagascar's principal port, with Mahajanga on the west coast as a further option.
