Petroleum is the heart of Amsterdam's business: of the 74.4 million tonnes handled in 2024, roughly 76% were oil products — crude, gasoline, diesel and jet fuel — making it Europe's largest petrol and petroleum port. It is also the world's leading import harbour for cocoa beans, and handles wet and dry bulk, project cargo, RoRo, non-ferrous metals and offshore components; tankers made up more than two-thirds of around 8,300 annual vessel calls. Containers are a minor part of the mix (about 5% of calls) — shippers moving box volumes through the region use neighbouring Rotterdam, Europe's leading container port. The port plans to end coal transhipment entirely by 2030, repurposing the land for renewable flows. Amsterdam's hinterland links by inland barge, rail and road across the Netherlands and north-west Europe are excellent, which matters most for bulk and fuels. Customs clearance runs through Dutch customs under the EU Customs Code. In practice, Amsterdam is the first choice for energy products, cocoa and bulk, while containers and deepsea liner cargo are better served by Rotterdam or Antwerp.
