Copra, tobacco and spices once moved through Ampenan (UN/LOCODE ID AMP), formerly the principal trading port of Lombok in Indonesia's Lesser Sunda islands, but it is no longer an active cargo port. Exposed to the strong swell of the Lombok Strait, the open roadstead closed in 1970 and all shipping shifted to Lembar in south-west Lombok in 1979. Today Lembar is the main gateway for containers, ferries and general cargo to and from Lombok, complemented by Benoa on Bali. Ampenan now survives chiefly as Mataram's historic port quarter.
