Around 51,500 TEU and 626,000 tonnes of cargo a year make Yos Sudarso the principal seaport of Indonesia's Maluku province in Ambon City. Operated by PT Pelindo, it handles passenger ships (including Pelni liners), general cargo and boxes across roughly 2,500 vessel calls a year. Because Maluku is an archipelago of hundreds of islands with few road links, supplies arrive by sea at Ambon and are redistributed to outlying islands by ferry and speedboat. Its position near sea lane ALKI III, linking East Asia and Australia, and the rich tuna grounds nearby shape its cargo mix. With a depth of about 11 m the port takes medium-sized vessels but remains chiefly a supply and distribution hub for domestic trade. In 2025 Pelindo began building a modern passenger terminal and converted two quay container cranes to electric power, while container throughput rose about 15% by mid-2025. For international lines and larger container volumes, cargo usually routes through Makassar or Surabaya (Tanjung Perak).
