About 5% of all petroleum consumed in France passes through Ambès, making the headland at the Bec d'Ambès the fuel hub of the Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux and accounting for roughly 30% of that port's throughput. Some 24 km north of Bordeaux, where the Garonne meets the Dordogne in the Gironde estuary, the Docks des Pétroles d'Ambès (DPA), founded in 1934, run a public tank farm for crude oil, refined products and biofuels. Berths handle vessels loading and discharging petroleum products and liquid ammonia, with Yara's chemical operations alongside. With a channel depth near 6.4 m and a tidal river setting, Ambès is a dedicated liquid-bulk and chemical port with no container or general-cargo role. Forwarders moving containers use the Bordeaux outport of Le Verdon or larger Atlantic gateways. Customs for bulk and project cargo is cleared through the Port of Bordeaux authorities.
