Copper concentrate is the single reason Amamapare exists as a port. Operated by PT Freeport Indonesia in Mimika Regency, Central Papua, the terminal receives slurry pumped more than 110 km through three pipelines from the ore-processing plant near Tembagapura, then dewaters, filters and dries it on site. The feeder vessel Ajkwa ships roughly 1.1 million tonnes of concentrate a year to larger carriers, feeding PT Smelting at Gresik and copper smelters worldwide, while inbound supplies and fuel for the mine move the other way. This is a private industrial facility rather than a public commercial port, with no container or general-cargo services. A channel depth of about 6.4 m and the shallow Arafura Sea setting keep operations focused entirely on concentrate exports. Forwarders handling general freight for the Timika area use the public port of Pomako; for wider liner connections, Sorong or Jayapura are the realistic options.
