Unlike the commercial ports of the Black Sea, Alushta on Crimea's southern coast is foremost a seaside resort rather than a freight harbour. Its waterfront is an open roadstead with poor shelter and a shallow pier; a Soviet-era plan to build a commercial sea port was never realised. Freight relevance is therefore very limited, confined to local small craft and excursion traffic. For commercial consignments, larger Black Sea ports — internationally, Constanța in Romania — are the realistic choice.
