Hutchison Ports, through its Altamira Terminal Portuaria, anchors one of Mexico's four largest container gateways on the Gulf coast. Altamira (MXATM) is a purpose-built basin port in the state of Tamaulipas, immediately north of Tampico. Box handling is shared mainly between Altamira Terminal Portuaria and Infraestructura Portuaria Mexicana, alongside facilities for breakbulk, project cargo and automobiles moved on a RoRo basis. Containerised cargo grew markedly in 2024, with more than 472,000 TEU handled between January and July alone. A large petrochemical zone and an LNG import terminal shape the port's liquid and chemical traffic, with combined container capacity near 1.2 million TEU. Rail connections and highways toward Monterrey, San Luis Potosí and the Bajío link the quays to the industrial heartland of northern and central Mexico. As a major Gulf customs district, Altamira clears import and export flows for the automotive, chemical and consumer-goods sectors. Shippers on different routings can fall back on Veracruz to the south and neighbouring Tampico.
