Canadian terminal operator Logistec agreed in February 2026 to take full ownership of the IPA breakbulk terminal at Altamira (MXATM), joining Hutchison Ports at one of Mexico's four largest container gateways. The purpose-built basin port sits on the Gulf coast of Tamaulipas state, immediately north of Tampico, and handled roughly 880,000 TEU in 2023 against terminal capacity approaching 1.2 million TEU. Box work is split mainly between Altamira Terminal Portuaria (ATP) and Infraestructura Portuaria Mexicana, with further berths for breakbulk, project cargo and vehicles moved on a RoRo basis. ATP added 350 metres of quay to its existing 600-metre face, lifting handling capacity by about 30 per cent and allowing calls by very large container vessels. Ocean Network Express shifted its ANSG and ANSG2 Atlantic-Gulf services from Infraestructura Portuaria Mexicana to ATP during spring 2026. A large petrochemical zone and an LNG import terminal drive liquid and chemical volumes, while groundwork started in 2025 is preparing the northern zone for up to six additional terminals. Rail links and highways toward Monterrey, San Luis Potosí and the Bajío connect the berths with industrial northern and central Mexico. As a major Gulf customs district, Altamira clears automotive, chemical and consumer-goods trade in both directions, with Veracruz further south and neighbouring Tampico as practical alternatives on different routings.
