Up to 2.7 million tonnes of cement a year make Alpena (US APN) on Lake Huron one of North America's largest cement sites; the plant — now branded Amrize after Holcim/Lafarge spun off its North American arm in 2025 — draws on a vast adjacent limestone quarry. The port is firmly a dry-bulk operation, shipping Portland cement and limestone aboard self-unloading Great Lakes freighters, or lakers, to customers across the Great Lakes states. In 2021 the operator won a USD 3.7 million federal grant to deepen and widen a slip so it can take longer vessels. Container traffic, international liner calls and conventional customs clearance play essentially no role here; the port serves domestic Great Lakes movements. Road and rail connect the hinterland, but waterborne transport remains the cheapest mode for bulk volumes. For other regional bulk such as limestone, Stoneport/Calcite near Rogers City is an alternative, while Detroit or Cleveland suit general cargo.
