DP World has run the terminal in a joint venture with the port authority EPAL since 2009, lifting annual throughput from about 250,000 to roughly 755,600 TEU after an initial $114 million upgrade. A second, larger expansion is now under way: after completing a roughly $538 million first phase that created about 4,530 jobs, the terminal aims to lift capacity further to around 800,000 TEU in a subsequent stage. Six berths, about 34 hectares and some 11 metres of depth make Algiers the principal container gateway of Algeria, handling more than 60% of the country's external trade and around 10–12 million tonnes of cargo a year. Traffic is heavily import-driven — food, consumer goods, vehicles and machinery for the densely populated capital region — while Algeria's hydrocarbon exports move instead through the oil and gas ports of Arzew and Skikda. Cargo reaches the interior mainly by road, supported by the national motorway network. Customs clearance is handled by the Algerian customs administration. For destinations outside greater Algiers, Béjaïa, Oran or DP World's Djendjen terminal can be alternatives depending on services, and the planned El Hamdania deepwater port at Cherchell may reshape the regional picture over time.
