Steel, wood pulp, scrap iron, grain and molasses define the cargo mix at Albany, an inland seaport roughly 200 km up the Hudson River in New York State under UN/LOCODE US ALB. Rather than container lines, the port specialises in breakbulk, bulk and heavy-lift project cargo: together with stevedore LOGISTEC it handles around 250,000 tonnes of breakbulk in a typical year, backed by a grain elevator of 13.5 million bushels and bulk-liquid storage of about 18 million gallons for molasses. Its standout strength is oversized and heavy-lift movements — in 2024 a roughly 940,000-lb GE Vernova generator was transferred onward by roll-on/roll-off, self-propelled modular transporters and barge. With its 85-acre Beacon Island site, Albany has also become the largest fully permitted offshore-wind manufacturing and staging port on the US East Coast. The hinterland is served by rail (CSX, Canadian Pacific), the I-787/I-90 interstates and the Hudson barge route. Customs clearance runs through US Customs and Border Protection, while containerised consignments move via the nearby Port of New York/New Jersey, Albany's natural container alternative.
