Roughly three to four million tonnes move through Albany each year, Western Australia's oldest deep-water port and a dedicated dry-bulk gateway on the Indian Ocean. Run by the Southern Ports Authority since 2014, it functions overwhelmingly as an export outlet. The CBH Group ships grain from Berth 3 using loaders rated at up to 1,600 tonnes per hour, AustSand loads silica sand at the same berth at around 400 tonnes per hour, and woodchips load at Berth 6 via a fixed loader at about 900 tonnes per hour. Fertiliser and fuel are the main inbound cargoes, serving the surrounding agricultural region. Albany handles no container traffic, so standardised boxes are routed through Fremantle near Perth. Road and rail link the port to the wheatbelt and forestry hinterland, making it a proven export option for agricultural and forestry bulk but not a choice for containers or breakbulk.
