Once the shipping point for the alabaster gypsum discovered off this Lake Huron shore in 1837, the port of Alabaster (UN/LOCODE US LBA) in Iosco County, Michigan, no longer operates a commercial marine cargo terminal — its 1928 over-water bucket tramway, at roughly 1,900 metres long once the world's longest, was demolished in the 1990s and the last loading building removed in 2020. The site has never handled containers. Although U.S. Gypsum (USG) revived local mining with the Avery Quarry that opened in May 2024 (ramping toward roughly 700,000 tons a year by 2026), the raw gypsum now leaves by a new Lake State Railway rail spur toward Tawas City rather than by lake freighter. For waterborne cargo, Bay City and Saginaw on Saginaw Bay, or the major port of Detroit, are the practical alternatives.
