Phosphate was for decades the cargo that defined Al Qusayr, shipped from here by the Italian Red Sea Phosphate Company from 1916 until operations shifted to Safaga in the 1960s. Registered as EG AQU, the port is an open bay on the Red Sea with no breakwaters, limiting calls to vessels of roughly 10,000 GT. It offers no regular container, customs or general-cargo handling, so its relevance for freight forwarders today is limited. Mineral and bulk exports are better served by Safaga to the north, while containerised consignments route through Sokhna or Suez.
