Some 958,000 tonnes of cargo and about 13,900 handled containers passed through Al Mukalla in 2024, confirming its role as the main maritime gateway for Yemen's eastern Hadramout, Shabwah and Al Mahrah governorates. Sheltered in Khalf Harbour — a breakwater entrance roughly 105 metres wide and about 10 metres deep — the multipurpose port is run by the state Yemen Arabian Sea Ports Corporation (YASPC) and logged around 111 vessel calls that year. Principal goods are foodstuffs, cement, oilfield equipment and general cargo, the latter accounting for some 848,000 tonnes; boxes are lifted by ships' gear, a shore crane and a reachstacker rather than dedicated gantry cranes. Inland distribution is entirely by road, as Yemen has no railways. Mukalla stayed largely operational through the civil war, but security and insurance costs should be checked case by case. For pure container traffic Aden is the stronger option, while Nishtun serves the far east of the country.
